ZCHHS Math Wizards Triumph at 2025 Hua Luo Geng Gold Cup Invitational Tournament

Four exceptional students from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School (ZCHHS) brought honor to the Philippines by bringing home one silver medal, two bronze medals, and five merit citations at the 2025 Hua Luo Geng Gold Cup Mathematics Invitational Tournament held last August 2-5 at the Hong Kong Asia TV Station Auditorium and East Kowloon Kai Tak Auditorium. Leading the winners was Grade 9 student Vincent Benito O. Chan, who earned the tournament’s sole silver medal for his outstanding individual performance. Grade 7 student Dylan Matthews M. Lim and Grade 6 student Jerome Rance V. Ejedio each received bronze certificates, while Grade 6 student David Gabriel C. Reaport earned a certificate of merit for his notable performance. The competition featured 624 participants from 23 Chinese provinces, five autonomous regions, and delegations from Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, and the Philippines. China's Hunan Province and Shanghai City led the event, which honored the late Chinese mathematician Hua Luo Geng, famous for his contributions to number theory and for promoting math research and education in the communist state. The Hua Luo Geng Gold Cup challenges young math enthusiasts with nine open-ended questions to be answered within 2.5 hours. It aims to develop students’ problem-solving and collaboration skills in a highly demanding environment specifically designed for Chinese elementary school students. Organizers note that all Chinese participants in the internationally acclaimed International Math Olympiad have previously competed in this prestigious tournament. Named in honor of the late Chinese mathematician Hua Luo Geng, the competition pays tribute to his significant contributions to number theory, math research, and education. Born in 1910 in Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, Hua’s work in optimization and operational research greatly influenced the Chinese economy. He passed away in 1985 in Japan and served as a member of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress. The Philippine delegation was led by Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) Officer Harry Uy and coach Mr. Jomar S. Ejedio, who commended the students for their determination and excellence in this highly competitive international contest.
